How to start a blog + a free blog checklist.

Everyday i get asked "how do you start a blog" and is it worth the money? and the answer is yes. Starting a blog was and still is the best thing that I've ever done, and everyday i'm grateful for the surroundings i have around me. Starting a blog can be fairly difficult if you're not familiar with websites, codes and many more but i have put a guide together to make things easier!

Are you ready to start a blog?

Whether you're new to the blogging community or you're already a blogger but want to become a full time blogger, i got you covered.

Blogging isn't just about writing beauty reviews, but it's also a job that many people have and love to do, and not to mention you can make money from it.

Decide on your niche.

First and foremost is deciding on your niche i.e what do you want to blog about? There is so many niches out there, and so much to choose from as well. For an example i blog all things beauty and lifestyle while touching on subjects like mental health, but everyone is different, and therefore, only you can decide what you want to blog about.

To give you a little help in hand i have listed a few ideas on what you can blog about.

  • Beauty
  • Lifestyle
  • Fashion
  • Interiors
  • Travel
  • Home
  • D.I.Y
  • Fitness
  • Photography
  • Parenting
  • Business / graphic design
  • Organising
  • Health
Sticking with a niche will help bring you more engaged followers, whereas having a blog that is here there and everywhere won't help you in the long run so please bare that in mind.

Choose a platform.

Next you'll need to do your research, find a platform you find easy to create and blog on. I highly recommend blogger as it's something i'm familiar with but you can also go for

Choose a blog name.

Once you have decided on a niche and a platform you want to blog on you'll need to come up with a unique name for your blog. Coming up with a name for your blog can be difficult if you have no idea what you want to be known as. I use to be known as 'sholaspinkparadise' but it didn't reflect on me as a person and what i blog about so i come up with 'sholalovesblog' which represents me and my blog at the same time.

Stuck on choosing a name? Grab your notebook and pen and start brainstorming your ideas. It can be a favourite place, food, drink or colour, or you can use your name like i do.

Register your blog domain.

Now that you have chosen a blog name, it's time to secure it and make it your own. There's so many places you can go for registering a blog domain, but i use Google domains which i pay for yearly.

Buy a blog theme.

It's time to buy a blog theme and start adjusting it to your style. There's so many places for purchasing a blog theme, i like to browse through Etsy which sell blog themes at a small price but my favourite seller to buy a pretty blog theme from is Blog Pixie. Her themes are so girly and elegant and i have noticed my motivation to blog more is because of my theme.

Add pages to your blog.

Adding pages to your blog is SO important, i can't stress enough. Having pages help make everything easier when people visit your blog and want to find a specific thing. It navigates them in the right direction, therefore it helps on your behalf.

Design your blog.

Now for the fun bit, designing your blog and adding pretty graphics to make your blog stand out to the public. I purchased graphics from Blog Pixie and honestly, it's a game changer!

Plan blog post content.

Going to the beginning of the blog post where we decide on a niche, it's time to start planning blog content and start uploading. I don't know about you but when i first started blogging i didn't have a clue on what to write for my first post, and still to this day i struggle to find a title. I find searching 'blog post ideas' or 'blog post idea's for newbie bloggers' on Pinterest easy when you're at a loose end and have no idea where to start.

Write your first blog post.

You're probably thinking "what, now?" and the answer is yes. Writing your first blog post brings more people to your blog when you announce your blog launch, and i guess it makes you look like you wasn't kidding.

Launch your blog.

Last but no means least is launching your blog. This can be quite scary but trust me, it's worth the anxiety! Once you are ready, promote  your blog on your social media platforms and add your link to your bio's so people can head straight to your blog without the faff.
